Have you ever shouted “Expelliarmus!” while holding a pencil like a wand?

Or you’re like me, telling Siri, “Lumos” when lights go out?

I was telling my friend about the Harry Potter afternoon tea I had at the Warner Bros. Studio Tour, when suddenly, the conversation  drifted to:

“What’s the most iconic Harry Potter spell?”

I instantly said Expecto Patronum.
He argued for Wingardium Leviosa.
His reasoning? The memes. The mispronunciations. The pure Hermione sass. Okay, fair.

And with over a hundred spells scattered across books, films and even video games, it’s easy to feel a bit well, spellbound in all the wrong ways.

That’s when I realized Potterheads have dozens of favourite spells, but even we forget what some of them actually do. And if you’re prepping for trivia night, captioning your Hogwarts-themed Instagram photo or penning the perfect spell into a Harry Potter postcard swap (yes, that’s a thing) a refresher couldn’t hurt.

Stylized silhouette artwork shows a wizard figure outlined in red with Hogwarts towers embedded in the cloak, captioned “Piertotum Locomotor.” The spell name references one of the many powerful Harry Potter spells used to animate statues in defense of Hogwarts.

That’s why I created this handy, easy-to-understand guide to Harry Potter spells: what they mean, how they’re used and why they matter. This list is your go-to magical glossary.

Let’s begin, shall we? Wands at the ready! 🪄

10 Most Famous Harry Potter Spells

These are the legends. The ones every Potterhead quotes, mimics, or mutters under their breath during life’s dramatic moments.

1. Expelliarmus: Disarms an opponent.
Harry’s go-to spell. Simple and effective

A determined Harry Potter aims his wand forward, casting a spell that bursts with orange light against a rubble-strewn background. This action scene emphasizes the urgency and power of Harry Potter spells in combat

2-3. Lumos / Nox: Light your wand tip / Turn it off
Perfect for sneaking snacks at midnight or navigating dark hallways. (Yes, Siri knows “Lumos” too!)

🪄 Want to cast Lumos for real? Grab this Harry Potter light-up wand. It glows just like in the movies! 🪄

4. Alohomora: Unlocks doors and windows.

Remember when they were trying to escape Filch in their first year, and Hermione unlocked a door, only for them to stumble straight into Fluffy, the three-headed dog? Oops.

5. Stupefy: Stuns your opponent
A classic duel-stopper. Like a magical punch to the face but classier.

6. Petrificus Totalus: Full body-bind curse
Freezes the target stiff as a board. Just hope you land in a comfortable position.

Hermione used this on Neville because he tried to stop them from sneaking out at night? I can still hear the thud he made as he hit the floor.

7. Expecto Patronum: Conjures a Patronus
Used to ward off Dementors. Sometimes I mutter this at work when the vibes are not it. IYKYK.

A young wizard with glasses extends his wand mid-spell, releasing a bright golden light in a dark forest. The image highlights a protective Harry Potter spell in action.

8. Accio: Summons objects to you
Accio postcards, Accio coffee, Accio life together.

9. Wingardium Leviosa: Levitates objects
It’s LeviOsa, not LevioSA. Still the best way to make things fly with sass.

10. Avada Kedavra: The Killing Curse
Unforgivable. Unblockable. Utterly terrifying. Use only in stories, please.

A fierce-looking witch with wild black hair, dressed in gothic robes, casts a green spell that swirls through the air. This intense scene captures the dark magic of Harry Potter spells used by Death Eaters.

Used by Hermione during the Battle of Hogwarts to turn a staircase into stone and block pursuing Death Eaters. Petrifies objects on demand.

    ⚔️ Piertotum Locomotor: Animates statues
Cue the Hogwarts battle music. This one gives me chills every time.

A towering knight-like statue kneels with a massive weapon in the entrance of a grand hall lit by flames. The scene suggests magical defenses activated by ancient Harry Potter spells protecting Hogwarts.

Harry Potter Healing Spells (Magic First-Aid)

    For minor and serious injuries.

Luna used this on Harry’s nose and called it “exceptionally ordinary.” Adorable, efficient and totally useful, just like some of the quotes in my Harry Potter Captions post.

The ultimate Unforgivable. Instant, unblockable, unforgettable. You-Know-Who’s favourite.

Duelling Spells: Best Defensive Magic for Wizards

Perfect for when you’re facing off in a proper duel (or just need to block Peeves).

Psst! Some of the most iconic duel spells like Expelliarmus, Stupefy, and Petri were already covered in the Famous Spells section. But here are a few more that’ll help you win a wizarding showdown (or prank your friends).

    Impedimenta: Slows or hinders attackers

    ⬆️ Liberacorpus: Reverses Levicorpus
Drops the poor victim back down. Hopefully gently.

👻 Riddikulus: Transforms a Boggart into something funny
Best used when facing your worst fear. Laugh at it, and poof, Boggart be gone!

First taught by Professor Lupin in Prisoner of Azkaban, this one’s a crowd favourite in Defense Against the Dark Arts.

This image shows a scene from a Harry Potter film, where a Hogwarts professor stands closely behind a student in Gryffindor robes, guiding him as he holds a wand. The student looks focused and slightly tense, while other Hogwarts students in uniforms observe in the background under warm, golden lighting.

    Everyday Utility Spells

Because sometimes the real magic is cleaning without lifting a finger.

    🧽 Scourgify: Cleans up messes

    Environmental & Elemental Spells

Conjure the elements like a magical weather wizard.

💧 Aguamenti: Produces a stream of water
Harry used this spell in Half-Blood Prince while trying to give Dumbledore water after drinking the cursed potion. The moment was tense, desperate and emotionally unforgettable. I still tear up every time I read that chapter or rewatch it in the film.

🔦 Lumos Maxima: Creates a burst of bright light
    When “Lumos” just isn’t enough.

🔼 Ascendio / Aresto Momentum: Propels you upward / slows your fall
One gets you out of trouble fast, the other keeps you from face-planting.

Notable & Unique Spells (Advanced Wizardry Only)

The most fascinating spells that mess with memories, secrets and minds.

    🤯 Obliviate: Erases memories
Gilderoy Lockhart’s go-to spell. He’d steal heroic stories, cast Obliviate, and take all the credit. It’s also the Ministry’s tool to keep Muggles blissfully unaware of magic.

But it’s not always used selfishly. In one of the saddest scenes in Deathly Hallows, Hermione casts Obliviate on her own parents to protect them from Voldemort’s war. Erasing herself from their memories. Just thinking about it breaks my heart. 💔

🌌 Fidelius Charm: Hides a secret within a single person.
Used to protect locations like 12 Grimmauld Place.

    🧣 Legilimens: Reads thoughts
Allows access to another’s thoughts or memories.

💀 Morsmordre: Summons the Dark Mark
Terrifying, iconic and a clear sign to run.

Prior Incantato: Reveals the last spell cast by a wand.
A forensic spell with storytelling power.

    ⛺️Cave Inimicum: Detects approaching enemies
Protective perimeter charm. Perfect for tent camping while hiding from Death Eaters.

🔥 Protego Diabolica: A dark magical fire that shields only allies
Seen in Fantastic Beasts, used by Grindelwald. Powerful and deadly.

How Do Harry Potter Spells Work? (Wands, Emotion, and Skill)

Non-Verbal Magic: Quiet spells for advanced wizards (Snape-approved) Advanced witches and wizards can cast spells silently, which is handy in duels and stealth missions.

Wand Movement: Every spell has a signature flick. Each spell requires a specific movement. Incorrect wand work can backfire.

Intent & Emotion: Magic is powered by how you feel. Powerful magic needs clear focus and strong emotion. Remember Harry’s first Patronus? He had to feel real joy.

An elderly wizard in blue robes fires a powerful red spell from his wand in a dramatic duel. This moment showcases the strength and complexity of Harry Potter spells in battle.

    The Real Magic of Spells

In the world of Harry Potter, even a little swish and flick can lead to wonders or the occasional disaster (looking at you, Seamus).

Harry Potter and Seamus sit in a Hogwarts classroom, looking focused as a glowing pile of embers or magical substance floats before them. A bearded Professor Flitwick watches from the background.

Let me know your favourite spell! Mine’s definitely Lumos. I say it to Siri all the time, much to the amusement of my nieces and nephews. They’re convinced I have magical powers now, and honestly, I’m not correcting them.

A woman in a yellow-and-black Hufflepuff scarf smiles while holding a wand in front of a display of boxed wands, likely at a Harry Potter-themed store. The background features shelves filled with labeled wand boxes and velvet-lined displays.

Some of these spells even make their way onto the Harry Potter postcards I send.
