How to Send Postcard from Hogsmeade
I was so excited when I discovered you could actually send a postcard straight from Hogsmeade. As someone who collects postcards, this quickly became one of my must-do experiences at Universal Studios Hollywood.
📝 Step 1: Choose Your Postcard
Inside the Owl Post, you’ll find a Harry Potter postcard set for sale. When I visited, only one style set was available, and it’s unclear if other designs rotate throughout the year.

If you’re particular about your postcards (like me!) or want to send something more unique, you can absolutely bring your own.
✍️ Step 2: Write Your Message
Right outside the Owl Post, beside the wooden Owl Post mailbox (the one with the gold POSTAGE REQUIRED lettering), you’ll find a small area where you can pause and write your postcard.
Need inspiration? Try one of these:
- “Sending this straight from Hogsmeade! Wish you were here, preferably sipping butterbeer with me”.
- “This owl flew all the way from Universal Studios just to say hello.”
- “Greetings from the snowy rooftops of Hogsmeade. No dementors spotted… yet.” (Fingerscrossed 🤞🏻)

🦉 Step 3: Ask for the Special Hogsmeade Stamp
Once your postcard is ready, ask the staff to hand-stamp it with the exclusive Hogsmeade stamp.
Here’s what you need to know:
You’ll need U.S. postage. They typically sell regular Forever stamps. No Harry Potter-themed ones (at least during my visit!). If you prefer, you can also bring your own U.S. postage stamps.
Your postcard will be stamped with a “Hogsmeade” hand stamp featuring an owl in flight. This isn’t an official cancellation mark. It’s a souvenir-style stamp featuring a bold “Hogsmeade” header.

If you’re a Harry Potter fan, Postcrosser or snail mail lover, this postmark alone makes the experience worth it.
📮 Step 4: Drop It in the Owl Post Mailbox
Once your postcard is written, stamped and marked with the Hogsmeade stamp, head just outside the shop and look for the wooden mailbox.
📬 Drop it in, and that’s it! Your postcard is officially on its Muggle journey via USPS.

⏳ Estimated delivery time: 1–3 weeks (longer for international destinations).
It’s so easy right?!
Don’t forget to write a postcard to yourself as well. It’s my favourite kind of souvenir! It’s like mailing a memory to your future self. What a fun surprise to find in your mailbox days or even weeks later!
Postcard Tips from Hogsmeade
A little prep goes a long way in making it smooth (and magical). Here are a few tips I wish I knew before my visit:
✔ Bring your own pen.
It can get crowded inside, and having your own pen saves time (and stress).
✔ Bring your own postcards.
Aside from buying the postcard set at the Owl Post, I also brought some of my own. It was a mix of MinaLima’s illustrated postcards, the Royal Mail Harry Potter set, and cards from the Postcard Collection. I had no trouble getting them all stamped.

Bringing your own lets you choose designs that match your style. It makes the souvenir feel extra personal.
🪄 Pro tip: You can also ask the Owl Post staff to stamp your travel journal, photo print, or notebook, not just postcards. It’s a fun way to bring home a little extra magic.
✔ Bring U.S. stamps (or buy in advance).
They may sell out, and international visitors may not be able to use their local stamps.
✔ Jot down postage rates for reference:
🏷️ As of now: Domestic (U.S.) postcard: $0.51; International postcard: $1.55
Always check the official USPS website for the most up-to-date postage rates, especially if you’re mailing from outside the U.S. or sending internationally.
Important Note for International Visitors
If you’re travelling from outside the U.S., here’s what you need to know before mailing a postcard:
You must use U.S. postage stamps, even if you’re sending the postcard back to your home country.
The Owl Post uses USPS, so local stamps from abroad won’t work.
To make things easier, write your message and recipient’s address before your visit. Just leave space for the stamp and Owl Postmark.

Nope! You can have your postcard stamped at the Owl Post and take it home with you. I brought a few back to Canada and mailed them from here later.
