Looking for something unique to do in Oahu that’s not another beach day?

If you’re even remotely a movie fan, you’re in for a treat. We’re talking real-life filming locations where some of the biggest blockbusters were shot, including a certain island full of dinosaurs.

A panoramic view of a mountain range with dramatic ridges and rich greenery, seen from behind a white ranch fence. A wooden sign carved with the site’s name sits near the entrance, surrounded by open pasture and tropical trees.

Are you a Jurassic Park fan? I wouldn’t call myself a superfan, but I’ve definitely seen the original, and maybe up to the third movie. I haven’t kept up with the newer ones. The first one will always be iconic in my book. The sweeping music, that first dinosaur reveal, the way it made everything feel real, instant childhood flashbacks. Goosebumps all over.

A traveller stands beside the Jurassic Valley sign at Kualoa Ranch, surrounded by lush mountain. A cinematic and must-visit stop on any Oahu itinerary.

🎼 P.S. If you love soundtracks too, check out my experience watching Harry Potter with a live orchestra in Winnipeg (trust me, it was magical). 🎻

If you’re planning a trip to Oahu and want something scenic and cinematic, consider booking the Best of Kualoa Experience Package like we did. Kathy and I did this as a day trip from Waikiki, and I left feeling like I’d been dropped right into the heart of Jurassic Valley, minus the raptors, of course.

Here’s my honest Kualoa Ranch review of what the day looked like, what you can expect from each tour, and whether it’s really worth carving out a full day of your Hawaii itinerary.

Best of Kualoa Package: Full Day

Here’s how the Best of Kualoa Experience Package was structured during our visit:

TimeActivity
09:30 AMHollywood Movie Sites Tour
11:00 AMKualoa Grown Farm Tour
12:30 PMBuffet Lunch at the Ranch
1:40 PMJungle Expedition Tour

We chose this package not just for the variety of tours, but also because it was the only option that included roundtrip shuttle service during booking, something we needed since we didn’t rent a car.

🚗 Renting a Car Instead? Check out Discover Cars. It’s a super easy way to compare rates across rental companies and book with confidence.

Our pickup was at The Twin Fin Hotel, just a short walk from where we stayed in Waikiki. There were a couple more pickups after ours, so be sure to arrive early at your designated location. The shuttle runs on time, and they won’t wait.

Once we arrived at Kualoa Ranch, we were directed to the registration area, where a staff member called our names, gave us wristbands, and handed out a paper copy of our personalized tour schedule.

A printed itinerary showing the "Best of Kualoa Experience Package" at Kualoa Ranch with times for three tours, lunch, and transportation details, next to a Kualoa-branded wristband.

Tip: Take a photo of the paper schedule in case it gets creased or damp throughout the day.

Note: Once your tour is confirmed, Kualoa Ranch will send you your exact itinerary with scheduled times. This is the lineup we received, but your tour order may vary depending on the day and availability.

Hollywood Movie Sites Tour

This was hands down my favourite of the three tours.

A framed outdoor sign reads “LOST Film Location” and shows a scene from the TV show with a character standing near a concrete bunker against a backdrop of green mountains. In the background, a matching real-world bunker structure is visible, linking fiction to the actual location.

As we drove into the famous Kualoa Valley, the mountains opened up dramatically, and I was in awe. One of the other guests even started humming the Jurassic Park theme music, very fitting, considering the scene unfolding around us. If you’re into movie trivia, iconic filming spots or just breathtaking nature, this 90-minute tour is worth it.

Movie Magic in Real Life

The tour covered filming locations from:

  • Jurassic Park (iconic log, sweeping valley)
  • Jurassic World
  • Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle
  • Godzilla
  • 50 First Dates
  • Lost
  • Hawaii Five-0
A military-style, dark green off-road vehicle with six rugged tires is parked under a shelter. It features “Jurassic World” branding and a small number "04" on the side. A smiling woman sits inside the open cabin.

One highlight was stopping at the World War II military bunker, carved into the cliffside. It’s been featured in Jurassic World, Lost and more. Inside, you’ll find props, movie posters, and historic displays.

A large black wall display with a green and yellow header labeled “Kualoa TV Shows & Series” features dozens of posters of TV shows filmed on-site, including Hawaii Five-0, Magnum P.I., LOST, and NCIS: Hawai‘i. Each poster is organized in neat rows. An essential part of any thorough Kualoa Ranch review showcasing its Hollywood history.

There’s one scene in Jurassic Park that’s always stayed with me: when Ellie (Laura Dern) is sitting in the Jeep and slowly stands up, completely stunned as she sees a brachiosaurus for the first time. Dr. Grant pulls off his glasses in disbelief. The camera pans up, the music swells… and then comes that unforgettable line: “Welcome… to Jurassic Park.

Expansive grassy field leading to steep, jagged green mountain ridges covered in lush vegetation, with dramatic shadows cast by passing clouds under a vibrant blue sky.

I remember watching that scene as a kid, completely transfixed. And as our shuttle rolled into the valley at Kualoa Ranch, I felt like I was in the movie too.

 Helpful to Know:

The terrain is rugged but paved.

There’s a stop where everyone gets out to take photos.

The shuttle is shaded and comfy.

The guide shared fun trivia and gave us time to ask questions.

Tourists walking among large dinosaur skeleton props on grass surrounded by green hills and trees. A popular stopover area frequently mentioned in a Kualoa Ranch review.

Kualoa Grown Farm Tour

After a short break, it was time for our second tour of the day: Kualoa Grown. Look for the tour’s designated meeting spot. There are plenty of signs to guide you, but if you’re unsure, just ask any staff member. Everyone we spoke to was super friendly and happy to point us in the right direction.

Two white paper cups rest on a dark railing overlooking a bright green farm. One cup holds a chunk of fresh pineapple, and the other contains a brown porridge. In the distance are neatly arranged crops, palm trees, and a mountain range.

We boarded a trolley-style vehicle and rode into the quieter side of the ranch, the working farm. This one was slower-paced and scenic.

What We Experienced

  • Cracked open macadamia nuts and snacked on them fresh
  • Sampled pineapple, cacao, and a local starch (can’t remember the name)
  • Learned about the Lo‘i system (Hawaiian irrigation used for taro)
  • Stopped at a movie site too! We saw the trailer and hut from Jurassic World
A shiny silver Airstream trailer and a small rustic wooden structure labeled “Beer Garden” stand side by side under a canopy of sprawling tree branches. They overlook a tranquil lake with a blue sky and soft clouds.

Our guide was upbeat, funny, and even broke out into dance moves at one point (10/10 energy).

Buffet Lunch (12:30 PM – 1:30 PM)

After two tours, we were more than ready to eat. The buffet was solid, all-you-can-eat style with a good mix of local dishes.

Menu Highlights

  • Shoyu Chicken
  • BBQ Pork
  • Rice
  • Stir-fried Vegetables
  • Mac Salad + Green Salad
  • Fresh Fruit
  • Cookies
  • Iced tea, juice and water

Helpful to Know:

  • Plenty of outdoor shaded seating
  • Bathrooms and handwashing stations nearby

Jungle Expedition Tour

Our final tour of the day was equal parts scenic and slightly bumpy fun.

A breathtaking coastal view framed by dense green treetops shows a small conical island known as Chinaman’s Hat rising from the turquoise ocean, with larger islands visible on the horizon. The scene is vibrant, with fluffy clouds scattered across a bright sky and palm trees dotting the shoreline below.

You’ll hop into an open-air vehicle and head into the jungle roads of the ranch. A waiver is required due to the rugged path, but don’t worry, it wasn’t scary at all.

A large green tour vehicle with “Private Nature Reserve” painted on the side is parked beneath a massive tree. A smiling guest stands next to it, ready to board for an outdoor excursion through the reserve.

What We Loved

  • Drove through narrow jungle trails into the mountains
  • Got views of the Ka‘a‘awa Valley from a whole new angle
  • Passed Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom filming locations
  • Learned more about the ranch’s historical and cultural roots
  • Heard the story of how mango trees were planted for a Hawaiian queen who loved them
  • Had the option for a short hike to a lookout (walking sticks provided!)
A Hawaiian tiki statue stands on a mossy rock wall amid terraced grass and volcanic stone ruins. A thatched-roof hut is visible further along the wall, backed by forested hills and patches of blue sky.

We tried the hike, but our legs were still recovering from our Diamond Head adventure the day before, so we stopped halfway. Still got gorgeous views, no regrets!

Helpful to Know:

  • Sit up front if you’re prone to motion sensitivity
  • Wear closed-toe shoes (even for the ride!)
  • Bring water and sunglasses

    Facilities at Kualoa Ranch

    • Restrooms: Well-maintained and easy to find
    • Gift Shop: Excellent selection of Jurassic merch, postcards, local snacks, macadamia butter.
    • Snack Bar: If the buffet isn’t your thing, there’s grab-and-go food available
    • Seating: Plenty of shaded areas to relax between tours
    • Accessibility: Most tours are low-impact but check individual tour guidelines

    Tickets and Booking

We booked this directly on the Kualoa Ranch website, mainly because it was the only way we could secure transportation from Waikiki.

That said, Viator also offers many Kualoa Ranch tours. If you’re not relying on shuttle service and prefer to book through a platform you already use, Viator is still a great option.

    So here’s my tip:
If you need flexibility (rescheduling, shuttle add-ons, etc.), book directly here. If you’re confident in your timing, you can also book via Viator here

Just be sure to check age restrictions and cancellation policies especially if you’re travelling with kids.

Final Verdict: Is the Best of Kualoa Experience Package Worth It?

    Yes, 100%.

If I had to pick just one of the three tours? The Hollywood Movie Sites Tour wins hands down. It’s iconic, immersive, and straight out of a Spielberg dream.

A few things to keep in mind

While we had an amazing time overall, a few small tweaks could make the experience even better:

    • Farm Tour: It would’ve been nice to get a slightly larger pineapple sample, one juicy chunk felt a bit too modest! A small tasting of their chocolate-covered macadamia nuts would’ve been a lovely touch too.
    • Shuttle Service: More time slots for the shuttle would help with flexibility, especially for guests joining other tour packages beyond the “Best of Kualoa.”
    • Movie Sites Tour: There could be more photo stops, some spots looked iconic but we only got to pass by them quickly.

      Would I do it again?

Absolutely! Kualoa Ranch is an experience that takes you through Hawaii’s landscapes, culture, and movie magic. For me, the sight of those towering green cliffs instantly brought back that childhood moment watching Jurassic Park for the first time. It makes you pause and smile (and yes, take 77 nearly identical photos of the same stunning view, anyone else? just me?!).

A wide grassy valley at the base of towering green mountains features oversized animal bones and props from the movie “Kong: Skull Island.” A sign in the foreground displays promotional art for the film and marks the area as a filming location.

Next time, I’d love to try the zipline soaring over the valleys or do the UTV tour for a different perspective. If you’re building your Hawaii itinerary and wondering if Kualoa is worth a full day, this is your sign to say yes.

Just don’t forget your camera and your curiosity.

This experience was fully paid for and booked directly through the official Kualoa Ranch website. As always, opinions are my own. I only recommend what I’d personally do again!

A pink background with the words 'xoxo Gail' in cursive script, followed by 'Postcards from G' in a slightly smaller font, also in cursive. The text is elegant and simple, conveying a personal and warm sign-off style.
