Closest town to Mount Rushmore: about just 2 miles away

If you want to be right there, Keystone is your best option. This tourist-friendly town is basically Mount Rushmore’s next-door neighbour. You’ll find souvenir shops, Old West saloons, ice cream parlours and a surprising number of hotels packed into a walkable downtown. It’s busy in summer.

If you like having access to a Target run, proper coffee shops or a little nightlife to go along with your national park adventure, Rapid City is a great choice. It’s the biggest city in the area, offering modern conveniences while still being within a scenic drive of Mount Rushmore.

This is actually where we stayed on our trip. We’re a bit more of the city-brat type! While we absolutely loved exploring nature and visiting the monuments, we also appreciated the convenience of being in a city with dining options, stores, and those little comforts of home.
