How to Visit Pearl Harbor Without Renting a Car
Visiting Pearl Harbor without a rental car is easier than you might think, depending on your budget and travel style.
Option 1: TheBus (Most Budget-Friendly)
Cost: Affordable flat fare; day passes available via HOLO card
Travel Time: Around 1 hour from Waikiki
Good For: Budget travellers, backpackers, slow travellers
How it works:
- Grab a HOLO card (available at ABC Stores or online).
- During our visit, we took Route 42 from Waikiki, but routes and schedules can change over time.
- Check the DaBus2 app or TheBus website for the latest route and schedule information before your trip.
- Follow the signs from the bus stop to the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center entrance.
Tips:
- Buses run regularly, but give yourself a buffer for delays, especially if you have timed tickets.
Why I Like This Option:
This is the option we used during our visit to Pearl Harbor. It was affordable, reliable, and surprisingly easy to navigate. As a bonus, riding alongside local commuters gave us a glimpse of everyday life in Oahu beyond the resort areas.

Option 2: Uber, Lyft or Taxi (Fastest & Most Flexible)
Cost: Varies by distance and time of day
Travel Time: 30 – 50 minutes from Waikiki
Good For: Groups of 2–4, late risers or last-minute planners

Using a ride-hailing service like Uber or Lyft is a quick and easy way to get to Pearl Harbor without the hassle of driving yourself.
Why It Works:
- You get dropped off directly at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center.
- Great for families with young children, older travellers or anyone who prefers to avoid crowded buses.
- It’s easy to split costs with a group of 2–4 people.
Tips:
- Be mindful of surge pricing during peak hours (especially late morning).
- Have a backup plan for getting back. It can be harder to find rides in the afternoon when everyone’s leaving at once.
- Schedule your return trip in advance if needed.
Option 3: Guided Tours with Transportation (Stress-Free & Informative)
Cost: Typically more expensive than public transit, but often includes transportation and attraction tickets.
Travel Time: 30–45 minutes from Waikiki (plus tour duration)
Good For: First-time visitors, families, travellers who want everything planned for them
If you’d rather skip the stress of booking separate tickets, navigating bus routes, or waiting in line, a guided tour is your best option. Most tours on Viator include roundtrip transportation from Waikiki, timed entry to the USS Arizona Memorial, and access to other top sites like the Battleship Missouri, Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum, or the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum.

These experiences are perfect for anyone who wants to show up, soak it all in, and leave the logistics to the pros.
Tips:
- Check what’s included before booking.
- Some tours focus only on the USS Arizona Memorial, while others include additional museums and attractions.
- Morning tours are often less crowded and leave more time for other activities later in the day.
- Review pickup locations and departure times carefully, especially if you’re staying outside Waikiki.

Is there parking at Pearl Harbor?
Yes, but spaces are limited and can fill up quickly. Another reason to skip the car!
Can I combine this with another site nearby?
If you’re planning to visit the Battleship Missouri or Aviation Museum, give yourself at least 4–5 hours total.
Do I need to buy tickets?
Admission to the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center and USS Arizona Memorial is free, but you must reserve a timed entry. Check the official Recreation.gov listing for current reservation requirements.
How early should I leave Waikiki for Pearl Harbor?
Plan to leave Waikiki at least 60 to 90 minutes before your timed reservation, especially if you’re taking TheBus. Travel times can vary depending on traffic, bus schedules, and where you’re staying.
What is the best time to visit Pearl Harbor?
Morning visits are often less crowded and temperatures are usually more comfortable. If you have an early reservation, allow extra travel time from Waikiki, especially if you’re using public transportation.
Can I visit Pearl Harbor and Waikiki in one day?
Yes. Many visitors spend the morning at Pearl Harbor and return to Waikiki in the afternoon. If you plan to visit the USS Arizona Memorial, Battleship Missouri, or other museums, allow at least four to five hours for your visit before heading back to Waikiki. If you’re planning additional sightseeing, my Oahu Without a Car itinerary includes several attractions that are easy to visit from Waikiki.
Is TheBus safe for tourists?
Yes. TheBus is widely used by both residents and visitors and is considered a safe and affordable way to get around Oahu. During our visit, we found it easy to use and appreciated seeing a different side of the island beyond the resort areas. As with any public transportation system, keep an eye on your belongings and be aware of your surroundings.
Can I use a stroller on TheBus?
Yes. Strollers are allowed on TheBus, making it a convenient option for families traveling with young children. Smaller strollers are generally easier to manage, especially during busy times. If possible, avoid peak commuting hours when buses may be more crowded.
What is the cheapest way to get to Pearl Harbor?
TheBus is usually the most affordable way to get to Pearl Harbor from Waikiki. Fares are inexpensive compared to rideshares or guided tours, making it a popular choice for budget travellers. If you’re only planning to use public transportation once or twice during your trip, it can also help you avoid the cost of a rental car.
Our Experience Visiting Pearl Harbor by Bus
We visited Pearl Harbor by bus during our trip to Oahu. From our hotel in Waikiki, we walked about a block to the nearest bus stop and caught Route 42 to Pearl Harbor.
The journey took about an hour, but we didn’t mind at all. In fact, it was nice seeing a different side of Oahu beyond the resorts and tourist attractions. Riding alongside local commuters gave us a glimpse of everyday life on the island that we probably would have missed in a rental car.

Since this was one of the few times we planned to use public transit, we skipped the HOLO card and simply paid our fare with cash for the round trip.
Looking back, visiting Pearl Harbor was easier than I expected. We didn’t have to worry about parking, navigation or rental car costs. We simply hopped on the bus, enjoyed the ride, and focused on the experience once we arrived.
If I could do it, you can too. Pick the option that fits your budget and travel style, then spend your time focusing on the experience rather than the logistics.
